Why we love Chicopee
Chicopee is a city in Hamden County, Massachusetts. Situated on the Connecticut River, it has a population of nearly 56,000. As of a 2010 census, it’s the second most populated city in Western Massachusetts, following Springfield.
Back in the late 1800’s, Chicopee was big on bicycles, having two of its own bicycle factories which facilitated a big boom in the bicycle industry.
The city is made up of three major neighborhoods; Willimansett, Fairview, and Aldenville. Fairview is mostly agricultural, while Aldenville and Willimansett are more residential. Chicopee was actually part of Springfield until it partitioned away in 1848.
Chicopee has the pleasure of having the first publicly funded public library west of Boston. The Cabotville Institute donated the library to the city. Chicopee is also home to the famous sports equipment company, Spalding Co.
The city has been home to several people of note, including American race car driver Fred Belcher, musician Teddy Charles, actor and singer George S. Irving, and pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays Scott Barnes amongst several others.
An annual air-show is held at Westover Air Reserve Base called The Great New England Air Show. It lasts for two days and has hosted up to 300,000 visitors at its peak in 2008.
A festival which features traditional Polish food is held each year in the month of May. The World Kielbasa Festival, as it’s called, lasts for four days and features traditional Polish polka dancing, rides and games.
Among points of interest to visit in Chicopee, you’ve got the Ames Tower in Cabotville, Frank J. Szot Memorial Park, Chicopee Memorial State park, and the Basilica of Saint Stanislaus.
