About Wilbraham MA
With a population of approximately 15 thousand, Wilbraham is a town situated in Hampden County, Massachusetts. The town is a suburb of Springfield, and consists of several neighborhoods, including the Pines Section, Boston Road Corridor, South Wilbraham, Wilbraham Mountain, East Wilbraham, North Wilbraham, and Wilbraham Center.
The town’s name comes from two towns near Cambridge in England, named Great Wilbraham and Little Wilbraham. In the seventh century, King Penda of the Mercians gave this land to his daughter, Wilburga. This area was known as Wilburgham meaning “Willburga’s homestead,” and that’s where the name Wilbraham comes from. There are even suggestions that the British Wilbraham towns came into being due the English king, Alfred the Great, who favored the area for his boar hunts and dubbed it as a “wild boar haven.” Some have suggested that Wilbraham was named after Sir Thomas Wilbraham, a strict anti-Puritan and staunch royalist, and this is one of the more likely explanations since many of his settlers made their homes in this area of New England.
Over the years the town has been home to several people of note, such as author and educator Lucy Morris Chaffee Alden, auto racers Erin Crocker and Mike Stefanik, hockey player Bill Guerin, novelist Raymond Kennedy, author Samuel Leech, actresses Alexandria Lydon and Kelly Overton, composer Dean Rosenthal, and baseball player Mike Trombley.
Wilbraham is surrounded by other cities and towns, with East Longmeadow to the southwest, Hampden to the south, Monson to the east, Palmer to the northeast, Ludlow to the north, and Springfield to the west. It sits largely on the Wilbraham Mountains, and the flat area of Wilbraham next to the mountains actually used to be a small inland sea ages ago.
